The data held in the Tithe Survey is regarded as one of the most complete agricultural records of pre-industrial Britain. The survey was initiated by the Act for the Commutation of Tithes in 1836. Under the Act a Tithe Commission was set up to oversee the commutation and survey.
The Tithe Survey consists of three document types.
The data in these documents lends itself very well to analysis in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Explore this site to find out more about the Tithe Survey and its implementation in GIS.
