Tithe Files
Tithe Files were produced by the local agents by answering set questions about the district. There were two main types of Tithe File, one for Tithe Districts with mainly arable land and one for pastural land. The questions covered, amongst other things, the description of the district, the agricultural practices employed, the agrarian output, the overall tithe paid in the last seven years, the agreed global rent charge and the fairness of the agreement reached. Apart from the questionaire the tithe files hold correspondence between the district and the commission in London. Tithe Files can be accessed in the PRO [external link] in their original form (PRO Ref. IR18). Most files have been weeded. | |
