The Tithe Commission
To oversee the commutation a committee was set up in London, the tithe commission. The three commissioners responsible for the tithe commission were William Blamire, a landowner and Whig MP, the Reverend Richard Jones, a Professor in political economy nominated by the Archbishop of Canterbury and Captain Thomas Wentworth Buller, a landowner and Whig supporter. The tithe commission was initially responsible for formulating general policy and later for confirming agreements of awards. The three commissioners were based in London and did not actually visit localities. Supporting them in the London office were the tithe secretary, his assistant and over 30 clerks and 20 draughtsmen (Holt 1984). Their eyes and ears at the local level were the Assistant Tithe Commissioners and Local Agents. | |
