Local Tithe Agents
It was the role of local agents to visit Tithe Districts where agreements had been reached. They were armed with printed Tithe Files with questions regarding the tithe district. The proceedings leading up to an agreement were thus; a meeting on the matter could be called by a quarter or more of the land owners or tithe owners. If 2/3 of land- or tithe owners agreed upon a total rent charge, the agreement became binding on everyone in the tithe district. This agreement then passed to the bishop of the diocese and the incumbent of the living concerned, given that ecclesiastical tithe was involved. Through the local agent the agreement was then given to the Tithe Commission which confirmed the agreement. | |
