Brief Chronology of Mining Developments

Year Month Day Comments
1865 Mar - Incorporation of the Nottingham Coal Company
1865 May - Plans to build only one wing of the 'cracker house' so only one pair of rolls and one screen would be required
1866 - - Mine opened and shaft sunk to 7 Foot Vein
1869 - - Leased to Broderick and Conyngham who sank shaft further down to Red Ash Vein
1870 Nov 17th Injunction applied for by the Mine Inspector to prevent more than 20 men working in a mine with only one exit; the court case was still pending at year end
1870 - - Despite the injunction threat and a scare from a small fire in the breaker the mine continued to work nearly full handed with only one means of egress, in violation of the new mine safety legislation
1870 - - The work on driving a second opening was reported to have been in progress since the early summer, but 'without accomplishing much'
1872 Apr - Mine sold to the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company and subsequently transferred to the Lehigh and Wilkes-Barre Coal Company
1888 - - The 1888 tonnage was the largest ever up to that time for an anthracite mine with a single main opening and breaker
1889 - - The remarkable output from a standard breaker was because the gentle dip of the veins allowed coal cars to reach every coal face, so more coal and less slate could be sent to the breaker
1889 - - The mine held the record for the most cars hoisted in a 10-hour period at 1301 cars or an average of 2.17 a minute from a shaft 365 ft deep
1890 Jan 2nd Part of the 3rd and 4th lift workings in the Red Ash seam caved in and disrupted the tracks of the Lackawanna and Bloomsburg Railroad at the surface; much water also entered the mine
1890 Jan 24th A second cave occurred in a remote part of the mine where pillars were being robbed; the squeeze continued spreading until March 7th
1890 Feb 1st Eight men, including the fire boss, were killed by an enormous explosion of fire damp; the mine foreman was prosecuted for violation of the Mine Law
1903 - - Start of new breaker construction
1904 - - Completion of new breaker
