Brief Chronology of Mining Developments

Year Month Day Comments
1865 - - The precise dates of opening the mine are not known; it does not appear in the list of mines given by Daddow and Bannan in 1865, but was in full operation by 1867
1867 Nov - Miners accidently set fire to gas pockets underground; dousing the fire failed so the shaft was capped to extinguish it
1867 Nov - Damage to the shaft was found to be severe, requiring many weeks for repairs to be effected, although work in the slope was able to continue
1867 - - The shaft was 416 ft deep to the Baltimore Vein and there was also a slope to one of the upper veins; the building over the shaft was 100 ft high; the breaker was east of the shaft
1867 - - According to the Scranton Republican, the mine was owned by Charles Parrish, William Conyngham and the Thomas Iron Company
1867 - - Unfortunately when the shaft cap was removed after the fire there was a big explosion in which three men were killed and the top of the building over the shaft was blown off
1869 Mar - The Thomas Iron Company purchased Charles Parrish's half share in the mine for about $100,000; the total expenditure to date on the shaft, breaker and for coal as yet unmined was almost $200,000
1872 May 11th An explosion of fire damp caused the death of two men and two others were seriously injured
1873 Apr - The Thomas Iron Company accepted the proposition made by the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company for purchase of the Pine Ridge lease
1893 Oct 1st The Delaware and Hudson lease expired September 30th 1893 and the mine was operated by the Algonquin Coal Company from October 1st.
