Brief Chronology of Mining Developments

Year Month Day Comments
1875 - - Considerable difficulty was experienced in shaft sinking because the rock was overlain by 60 ft of treacherous alluvial sand, which greatly added to sinking costs
1875 - - The shafts were sited only 200 ft apart to minimize the time required to connect them underground and effect a second opening for the mine
1875 - - Construction commenced with the sinking of two shafts, the opening of four drifts and the start of work on a 'very extensive breaker'
1876 Apr 6th The first three cars of coal were run through the breaker
1884 Dec - After the burning of the nearby Forty Fort breaker on November 27th, a railroad was quickly built to Harry E so the Forty Fort coal could be prepared there; the railroad was completed December 11th
1889 - - By this time the breaker was becoming dilapidated and the long and high trestle leading to it was 'not in a very firm condition'
1889 - - Reported that the veins were split on the property which added to the cost of mining; also the coal was rough and difficult to prepare so the culm banks were large for the tonnage shipped
1893 Nov - The lease of Harry E was taken over by Simpson and Watkins under the corproate name of the Forty Fort Coal Company
